FIXING THE RECYCLING SYSTEM

Addressing Challenges With the Recycling System

How we dispose of plastics is a problem – we need to do more to ensure there is the infrastructure nationally and globally to do this. It is clear that we need to stop plastic escaping into and polluting the natural environment. We also know that consumers need to learn to recycle more effectively. You can read more about consumer recycling in our State of Plastic Recycling 2020 Report.

The Situation Will Not Improve Overnight

The situation will not improve overnight, but as a collective, governments, packaging producers, retailers, brands, and consumers can make significant inroads and change the way the world approaches recycling in the future.

Our products are recyclable wherever #4 LDPE plastics, used in bags, film and ring carriers, are recycled. However, not all curbside recycling bins reclaim this type of plastic and it depends on your local recycling program. For example, in Spain, all plastic recyclable materials can be reclaimed through their curbside yellow bins. However, in other countries and districts, the infrastructure might have gaps.

Hi-Cone is working to do our part by promoting recycling and supporting recycling programs around the world where #4 LDPE plastics cannot be easily recycled through our Ring Leader and RingRecycleMe Programs

Since 1990, thousands of schools, businesses and groups from around the world have participated in the Ring Leader Program to recycle more than 2.7 million pounds of ring carriers. In the U.K, we are partnering with TerraCycle® to reclaim ring carriers, which is the first manufacturer-led recycling program with TerraCycle® globally. We are also working with Avangard Innovative in the U.S., Mexico and Canada to collect and recycle ring carriers and turn them into new ring carriers that can be used again and again. Our goal is to help advance the circular economy to reduce, recycle and reuse plastic so that it becomes a valuable resource rather than waste.

No single company can fix the recycling system.

We all have a role to play if we are to change behaviors at every level of society. Together we can:
